8 Simple Gas-Saving Tips

Though it has been criticized by environmental interests, Canada's recent oil sands development offers promising implications for global oil prices. Still, until that market is fully fleshed out with functional pipelines and transportation, gas prices are just as volatile as the politically unstable fields that the fuel is harvested from. Read on for eight easy tips to save you money by maximizing your fuel efficiency.
  • Shy away from high-speed driving. The faster you drive, the more aerodynamic drag your car has to contend with. An extra 20km/h increases fuel consumption by about 15%.
  • Keep your lead foot in check.Try to anticipate the ebb and flow of traffic so that you can limit yourself to steady acceleration and braking. This can increase fuel economy significantly.
  • Stay on top of your tire inflation. Every time your tire PSI falls 2 notches below the recommended level, you lose about 1% of fuel efficiency.
  • Don't overwork your air-conditioner. A/C subjects your engine to extra stress, causing a significant increase in fuel consumption. The same is true for the defroster setting.
  • Keep your windows shut! An open window equates to an increase in drag, which makes your gas less efficient on gas.
  • Stay on top of vehicular maintenance. Poor fuel economy is commonly associated with soiled air filters, worn-out spark plugs, and sub-optimal fluid levels.
  • Control your cruising speed. The cruise control option eliminates the constant revving and braking that occurs when drivers try to manually manage acceleration. Keeping fixed at a constant speed increases your gas efficiency over time.
  • Lighten the load. Some recommend loading your car's rear end with weight for extra traction during the winter, but be warned that this burdens your engine and decreases fuel efficiency. Clear out any unnecessary items when possible.

Safe Winter Driving Advice

Much of the motivation for Speers Auto Glass' commitment to quality windshield repair comes from their respect for safety. As we enter into the heavy winter months, safety on the road becomes even more of a priority. Beyond the improved visibility and protection from the elements that a well-repaired windshield can provide, there are some active technical tips that can help ensure safe winter driving. Read on for some important driving tips to help keep you safe through the storms this year.
  • Know when to stay home. The first and most important piece of advice to keep you safe this winter is to not be afraid to stay off the roads. Braving dangerous road conditions should not happen unless absolutely necessary. If you must venture out in poor conditions, at least delay your trip to give sanding and salting crews the opportunity to cover major road ways.
  • See and be seen. Visibility is key. Make sure your windshield is in good condition, with no obstructive cracks. Replace your windshield wipers – most people are due anyway. Consider a water-shedding solution like Rain-X to help you cut through storms. Give the inside of your windshield a thorough wash. Always be sure your headlights and brake lights are clear of snow, and use them all day long to promote visibility.
  • Learn to correct a skid. For front-tire skids, you simply need to take your foot off the gas, keep your hands in place, and give the car an opportunity to decelerate.

What to Include in your Winter Roadside Kit

It can be quite hard trying to find someone in a Canadian community that has never had the misfortune of being stuck in snow. Whether they blundered into a ditch or were buried overnight, there are countless stories about chilling roadside waits for help to arrive. Because unpredictable winter weather conditions can victimize anyone, it is important to carry a roadside kit in every vehicle you own. Assembling one of these kits is a small investment that can literally be the difference between life or death in the event of an accident. Furthering this month's theme of winter safety tips, we present to you a simple guide to help you assemble a functional roadside kit.
  • First aid first. The most important piece of your roadside arsenal is the fist aid kit. A few bandaids won't do. Include bandages, tweezers, scissors, sanitary latex gloves, tape, medications, rubbing alcohol, and antiseptic solutions.
  • Tools. You may need to tackle impromptu roadside repairs. Don't forget a screwdriver, wrench, hammer, jack, jumper cables, vice grip, or folding knife. Of course, in the winter this list will also include an ice scraper and shovel.
  • Warming items. Long waits can be very dangerous at roadside without a good collection of blankets, gloves, socks, and hats in your vehicle. You may also consider chemical hand-warmers and mylar blankets.
  • Flashlight. You will need to see, whether you are doing a roadside medical treatment, repair, or just a bit of reading to pass the time. Bring multiple flashlights and back-up batteries.
  • Stay seen. Pack small fluorescent cones and flares to alert drivers of your condition, and to keep them from colliding with you.
  • Food. Non-perishable items only. Protein bars, granola bars, beef-jerky, and dried fruits are recommended.
  • Find an appropriate duffel bag. Keep everything together in one kit so that items aren't rolling under car seats, costing you searching time in an emergency situation. Find a big and rugged duffel bag that can hold all of your items.

3 Steps for Fighting Off Foggy Windows

Maintaining proper visibility is crucial when trying to practice safe driving. This is known by drivers and law enforcement authorities alike. Many car owners have been pulled over and warned or ticketed for having their vision obstructed, whether due to windshield damage, or because of GPS systems and window ornaments cluttering their view. Though the importance of proper vision is understood, the danger of foggy windshields is often understated. Fog can simply be wiped off of the glass, causing many people to dismiss it as an insignificant problem, but windows can fog at the worst times, and frantic single-handed wiping is not a safe solution. Read on for some simple and effective fog-fighting strategies that go beyond pressing the dehumidifier button.

Keep wetness away
Fog typically builds up on windshields because of heightened levels of moisture in the car's interior. As the temperature drops, the air must expel its moisture, and the majority of it ends up deposited on the insides of your windows. One way to minimize the accumulation of fog is to keep excess moisture out of your car. This means sweaty gym gear, damp umbrellas, or glistening produce should be transported in the trunk. Be sure to kick any snow off of your boots before stepping into your car as well, or you risk feeding the fog!

Wash your windows
Most people keep the exterior of their windshield clean, but neglect its interior surface. Dirt offers moisture a base foundation upon which to settle. Removing this layer of dirt makes it harder for fog to form.

Fresh air reinforcements
Allowing your AC to recirculate only pushes the moisture around inside of your car. If you put the air on, the fog will be unaffected, and will actually worsen as your breath and sweat ups the humidity. Instead, allow new air to circulate and carry moisture out of your car.

3 Ways to Keep Your Car Cool

Recently, social media has been flooded with videos highlighting the inhumanity of leaving a child or pet inside a car during the summer. Until recently, some parents and pet owners could not see the harm in a 10-minute sauna-session within a car's interior. Research has shown that a car's temperature can rise by 19 degree Fahrenheit in only 10 minutes. Within an hour, a car's interior can exceed that of the outside by over 40 degrees! Though most people now understand the dangers this poses to their loved ones, temperatures can still rise enough to melt CD cases, discolour dashboards, and affect any electronics or valuables you may be storing within the car's interior. Read on for some strategies to help keep your car cool.

Why do car interiors heat up so quickly?
Some people think of this effect as being a large-scale version of frying ants under a magnifying glass, but the reality is quite different. Sunlight enters the car through the windows as short-wave energy which is then absorbed by the vehicle's interior, before being bounced back as long-wave infrared radiation. While the sunlight's infrared light can pass through the glass on its way in, it cannot escape back the way it came. This heat, now trapped, causes the car's interior to rise drastically in what is essentially a greenhouse effect.

What can I do to decrease the temperature of my car's interior?

  • Seek shade – This common-sense solution limits your car's direct exposure to sunlight, preventing its temperature from rising as a result of infrared rays.
  • Make your own shade – If a shady parking spot is not an option, you can make your own with car shades. Foil-faced reflective shades can cool your car significantly because they reflect heat.
  • Tint your windows – Many reputable tinting services exist that can provide you with a stylish and functional tint. Tinted windows alternately absorb or reflect UV light, keeping your car cool and your interior unaffected.

Shining Light on DIY Tint-Removal

Tinted windows are finally being appreciated. Long dismissed as over-stylized attempts to look alternately cool or menacing, people are now starting to understand the value of window tinting for heat reduction and shatter resistance. Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever, and car owners who have purchased tinting eventually notice the telltale bubbling that marks the end of their tint's lifespan. Removing your tinting at home is possible, but there are right and wrong ways to approach the job. Peeling your tint off will leave you with a sticky mess across your windshield that will require hours of finger-numbing scraping before your vehicle is ready for the road. Read on for an explanation of one popular method of DIY tint removal.

The "sun and ammonia" method
  • Create a windshield cover by cutting black garbage bags in roughly the same size and shape of your windshield. Spray your windshield down with soapy water and then apply your garbage-bag cover, taking care to smooth the plastic flat.
  • Lay protective cloth or tarp around the insides of your vehicle, and spray the interior pane of windshield glass with ammonia.
  • Before the ammonia dries, trap the moisture against the interior of your windshield with a second trash bag cut-out.
  • Allow the garbage bags to heat in the sun, and then begin peeling the window film. Make a small incision with a razor blade and begin peeling from a corner. Keep the tint moistened with ammonia as you work, and be careful not to slice into defroster lines. Any residual adhesive can be taken care of by scrubbing gently with steel wool dampened with ammonia. Once you have finished, dispose of the trash bags, and clean the glass thoroughly with an appropriate cleaner.
The dangers of doing it yourself
Though some car owners have success with the sun-and-ammonia method, it comes with some inherent risks. This method leaves significant room for error, risking cut defroster lines, ammonia damage to your car's interior, and having the potential to leave gummy adhesive marks on your windshield. Though DIY methods can save you money, professional window tint specialists can remove or replace your tinting at a reasonable cost, with no chance of causing extra damages or headaches.

Rain-X Application Tips

One of the biggest inconveniences faced by Canadian drivers can be seen on early winter mornings in the form of a thick layer of ice frozen onto the windshield. Nobody wants a vigorous scraping session as a precursor to a stressful morning commute. Fortunately, products like Rain-X exist to ward away excessive moisture in the winter.

More than a winter solution, these products have year-round utility, providing enhanced visibility during stormy weather conditions, and minimizing windshield wiper streaking. Some car owners are unsure of the best way to apply these products, but by following these simple steps, you can keep your windshield clear and your driving safe in the worst of conditions.

Wash your car.
The first step in a proper application is to wash your car normally. Any grit or grime that has accumulated on your windshield is a liability for an even coating of Rain-X, so take care to wash your windshield thoroughly. Once you have finished the wash, a thorough dry becomes equally important, as any lingering water will impact the application process.

Pull into the shade.
You should apply Rain-X on a mild day when possible, and ideally in the shade. Rain-X has a tendency to evaporate, and hot windows in direct sunlight will cook up the solution before it has a chance to set.

Apply Rain-X.
It is best to attack half of the windshield at a time. Use a soft cloth, preferably a microfiber piece, and use firm, circular wiping motions to apply the solution to your windshield. After you have finished, a haze should be visible.

Buff it out.
Moving from bottom to top, gradually buff away the haze using a different cloth that is soft and clean. Repeat this process a second time with another clean cloth, mirroring the firm and circular motions you used during application.

How did I do?
If applied correctly and in appropriate quantities, Rain-X or similar solutions should cause any water to bead onto the windshield in perfect circles. If they form into irregular shapes, you have either applied the solution incorrectly, or are beginning to experience signs of wear. In either case, another application will be required.

Sunroof Survival Guide for the Canadian Winter

Sunroofs are an undeniable luxury. Is there anything better than cruising down the street with the sun on your face as clouds hover overhead?

A sunroof gives any car a sporty veneer, and the open-concept feel adds both room and breathability for the driver. Sunroofs offer superior ventilation and are an excellent alternative to blasting air-conditioning on warm days.

For Canadians used to wading through bitter-cold winters, the sunroof is an even greater indulgence. Unfortunately, many people are left unsure of how to care for their sunroof during the winter. Read on for some simple tips on how to avoid common winter sunroof problems.

Do not open your sunroof during the winter.
While most people would not make this mistake for fear of being snowed on, many car owners will try to open their sunroof occasionally while parked to demonstrate the feature to friends or for maintenance. You must be sure to never attempt to open your sunroof when the temperature is below freezing. The sunroof's seal can freeze to the frame so that any attempt to open it damages the assembly. The freezing process is similar to that which many car owners have experienced when trying to wedge open doors or windows in the cold, except the sunroof's assembly is much more delicate.

Beware of winter car washes.
Car washes are tempting during the winter months as salt begins to calcify on your car's exterior. While you do not need to deny your car its cleaning, you should be mindful of your sunroof drain tubes afterwards. Drain tubes are included to prevent your sunroof from leaking, but sometimes icing can occur towards the bottom of the tube, especially if it is obstructed by snow build-up. It may not occur right away, but as water continues to build up and the drain tubes remain clogged, you may find yourself taking an icy-cold shower during your morning commute. Be sure to clear out any drain tube obstruction, and to monitor your sunroof closely before and after any winter washes.

Substance Over Style: The Benefits of Tinted Windows

Showcased everywhere from limousines to Mafioso-movie get-away cars, tinted windows have always been edgy and stylish add-ons. As cool as they may be, many people balk at the idea of investing in tinted windows, thinking them to be about as useful as a flame-job graphic streaking down the side of your vehicle. It may surprise some to learn that that tinted windows have a number of practical uses.

Read on to learn how tinted windows offer more substance than style.

Theft Prevention and Safety
Tinted windows obstruct the vision of thieves trying to peer into your car and assess the value of its contents. A thief will often only take the risk to break into your vehicle if they spot something that is worth the effort.

Legally tinted windows can still be seen through up close, but their theft prevention benefit does not end here. Windows treated with a security tint are much more durable. Even when broken, the thief would be left facing an intact panel of glass and film, and a great deal more work than they anticipated. In the case of a collision, tinted windows' durability offers an added level of safety, minimizing the risk of injury as a result of shattered glass.

Heat Control and UV Blocking
Unsurprisingly, tinted windows offer protection from the sun in the way that sunglasses shield your eyes. Tinting blocks over 90% of the sun's UV radiation, seriously reducing the driver and passengers' exposure to these cancer-causing rays. Tinted windows also means that you will cut down on air conditioning costs, as they are able to block around 70% of the heat generated by solar energy.

Foggy Windshields

This is a common culprit when the weather starts to cool down, your windshield fogs up. Most of us have had to deal with a foggy windshield before, but lets talk about why it fogs up, and the most effective way to fix this common problem.

Fogging is caused when water vapour condenses on the inner surface of the glass on a windshield.

There are 2 ways this could happen:
  • Air gets trapped inside your car form the previous day, and that air is more humid than the current air. Warmer air holds more moisture, almost double that of cold air. When the humid air mixes with the cold windshield glass it releases moisture which leaves condensation or fog on the glass.
  • When we sit inside a cold vehicle, we are inhaling the cold air but we exhale warm, humid air. Every breath we take projects more humidity to the inside of the car, and this can also condense on the windshield glass, and cause fog.
There are 2 common strategies to clear the fog:
  • When temperatures outside are above freezing and fog is created as a result of wet or damp people in the vehicle, run the air conditioner. Running it on cold will be most effective to reduce the fog buildup.
  • A quick fix, run heat through your vehicles defrosters. This will help the condensation to evaporate, similar to the way a dryer uses heat. When you catch the fog begin building up on your windshield, and when temperatures are cold, this method is effective.

If your windshield is extremely foggy, you can use a dry cloth first help to clear the fog, and then turn on the air conditioner.

Wiper Blades

Most people don't take notice but the windshield wipers are a very important safety feature on your vehicle. They should be replaced at least twice a year. Maintaining your wipers is one of the best things u can do for your car as well as yourself.

When purchasing wiper blades, you should opt for the best quality possible as they are designed to keep your windshield clear of any debris, improving visibility and safety. Also, don’t forget about the back wiper!

Even if the wiper use is limited, the rubber does have a tendency to degrade and crack over time. By having flawed wipers, you may find that when the time comes to use them, they are causing streaks and even worse, scratches.

There are 2 basic types of wipers:

Traditional – this blade has a metal framework that is a mount for the wiper, it holds the rubber strip in place with “claws”. These blades are still found on the majority of older vehicles on the road today, they are more affordable.

Beam – these blades are engineered for curved windshields, with a lower profile and one-piece body that is less likely to leave any streaks. They are becoming more popular and used in roughly 70% of new vehicles today.

Most wipers are in the price range from $20 to $50, and can be sold individually, or as sets. It is a relatively inexpensive way to improve safety for you and your vehicle.

Cold Weather and Your Windshield

The cold weather during our Canadian winters, as they are well known - can affect our vehicles negatively in several different ways. A very important safety feature on your vehicle is your windshield and windshields are extremely vulnerable to being damaged by the effects cold can cause. By educating yourself of the possible ways a windshield is affected by the cold, you will benefit by knowing how to avoid damaging it in the future.

You may be tempted to use quick solutions to remove the snow and ice buildup from your windshield, especially in the morning if you are in a hurry- but by taking the proper steps, damage can be avoided.

The first step is to turn on your car and allow it to gradually warm up, and turn on your defrosters. Do not blast hot air at your windshield as the temperature change can cause cracks.

When using an ice scraper, by using a bit too much elbow grease, you can cause damage to your windshield by aggravating small cracks or chips that are preexisting. After defrosting, you will be able to remove the buildup easier with the ice scraper.

You should never pour hot water on your windshield to attempt defrosting the ice. By applying heat you are causing the glass to expand, but because of the cold weather, the glass quickly retracts which can cause any existing cracks you have, to expand most likely leading to a windshield replacement.

To increase protection on your windshield you can use methyl alcohol instead of regular washer fluid, it has a lower freezing point. Always make sure you are thoroughly cleaning the ice and snow off your vehicle for improved visibility.

Defogging Your Windshield

Foggy windows can be a hassle while driving. The fogging usually occurs due to the temperature and moisture differences between the inside and outside of the vehicle. The quickest way to reduce the fogging in your vehicle is to reduce the temperature inside your car so the moisture stops forming on the glass. You can also turn the defrost vent on or open your windows to get rid of the irritating fog on the inside of your windows.

By turning your defrost button to warm the moisture will evaporate. This may be the option for your during the cold winter months. However, in the summer it's time to do the opposite. Since the inside of your car will be cool, and it's hot outside, you will be battling with humidity. Using your windshield wipers to get rid of the fog is annoying, so instead, turn the AC down. Try to avoid wiping away the fog with your hands as this will leave visible streaks on the inside of your windshield.

Clean your windshield regularly. By keeping your windshield clean you will improve visibility, and decrease fogging issues.

Window Tinting Benefits

There are several reasons that window tinting is a popular option for drivers. It reduces heat, reduces glare and UV exposure as well as increases security & privacy.

Heat Reduction – Having tints on your car reduces the amount of thermal rays that enter your vehicle. By blocking the wavelengths that create heat, the tints filter prevents the interior from over heating. Each tint is different in its heat rejection properties, always ask a professional to discover which tint works best for you.

Glare and UV Reduction - Glare that filters in through your rear and side windows can be avoided with a tint on your windows. You may be stressing out your eyes by trying to avoid the glare which can lead to eyestrain. In some cases, sunburn can be an issue as well – having tinted windows filters out 95% more UV light than regular window glass.

Security & Privacy - Even though window tints are not designed for security purposes, they do an extra layer of protection. More often cars get broken into because people on the outside are able to see the valuables on the inside. By having tints, the inside of your car will not be nearly as visible. If someone tries to break your window, it makes it more difficult when you have the tint. The glass will break but it will be held together in one piece.

There are different regulations in each Province, City, or State for the percentage you are allowed to tint your windows. The professionals at Speers Auto Glass will be able to assist you with all your tinting needs.

How Auto Glass Works

The auto glass in your vehicle is designed to protect you and your passengers. Auto glass is often overlooked and rarely discussed, however, it is a very important aspect of every vehicle. By simply observing, auto glass looks like regular glass. This is not the case, as auto glass functions very differently compared to standard glass.

In homes the windows are made from a type of glass that will break into large pieces when broken. These home windows are not comparable to auto glass as automotive windows receive much more strain. Automotive windows face every type of weather, rock chips, fender benders, and potholes. Since auto glass faces a variety of obstacles, it is made stronger to protect passengers and the vehicle.

Laminated glass, which is manufactured for the windshield of your vehicle is the first type of glass used. Tempered glass is also used, which is manufactured for the side and rear windows. Laminated and tempered glass work together to keep you safe in your vehicle. In the case of an accident these types of glass prevent the windshield and windows from breaking into sharp pieces which could injure occupants, and keep passengers inside the vehicle.

Since the auto glass in your vehicle keeps you and your passengers safe, it is important to repair any chips, cracks, or damage to your car's windows or windshield. When gone untreated, cracks and chips can become larger and require more labour in order to return to its perfected state.

Different Types of Windshield Cracks

Have you ever been driving down the highway, only to realize you've now got a crack in your windshield from just a small rock? No matter how small the crack is, it has the potential to spread across your entire windshield if not cared for immediately. There are several different types of windshield cracks that can occur.

Bulls-Eye Crack

The bulls-eye crack is named after the bulls-eye that is found on a dartboard. Appearing as a circular crack, the area of impact is noticeably visible. Leaving a bulls-eye crack on your windshield can become troublesome as it will allow dirt and oils to continually spread. Over a period of time, the crack will expand, making the crack more difficult to repair.

Star

The star crack is also named after it's noticeable star liked shape. These types of cracks are known to become difficult to handle if not the repair is delayed. Star cracks can appear very small at first. If the repair of a star crack is postponed, the crack is likely to spread with long streaks across the glass. To prevent further troubles, repair your star crack immediately.

Chip

Chips often occur when small debris is flung into the windshield. Leaving a small indentation, chips appear to be small and minor. Don't be fooled by the size of the chip as it can quickly spread with long streaks across your windshield if the repair is postponed.

Windshield Repair

A windshield has twice layers of glass and a special resin between the layers giving them strength. In the event of an accident the purpose of the resin is to hold everything in place keeping the people inside the vehicle safe.

A damaged windshield does not always need to be replaced if it has a chip or a crack you are often able to repair it instead of replacing it. If you do wish to repair it you will want to take care of the damage quickly as it can spread and become unrepairable. There are four conditions that must be in order to repair a windshield.

The first is the damage is taken care of quickly so that no dirt or moisture gets into the chip or crack. If this happens it can lead to a poor repair. The second thing is the repair can only be done if the damage is on the outer surface of the windshield or no more than 5mm. Third any lines that come from the point of impact can not be longer than 5 centimetres or make contact with the edge of the windshield. The final thing is the repair cannot be in the drivers field of vision. For more information about windshield repair and to get a quote please visit our website.

Factors Influencing the Price of a Windshield Repair

There are many different factors that influence the cost of a windshield repair or replacement, the type or the damage as well as the size of the damage and the type of vehicle are the mains ones. The range to replace a windshield is normally between $300 to $500 dollars.

The type of vehicle you have is the biggest influence on this, a more expensive vehicle will be more expensive to have the glassed replaced than a cheaper vehicle. The reason for this is the quality of the glass on more expensive vehicles is a higher quality than on less expensive ones.

When damage occurs to your windshield the first thing that must be done is to see if the damage is repairable. For smaller issues the cost of repair is must cheaper than replacement.
